MATCHING STATE STANDARDS

STATE STANDARDS

EXHIBIT/
PROGRAM

ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TOPIC/SKILL

1. The Nature of Science and Technology

5.1.2  Evaluate validity of claims based on evidence quantity and quality

* Extreme Physics Lab

Lab: Students experiment on Tamiya Cars with a variety of variables that impact car speed. Discussions include concepts of motion, inertia, ratios, gravity while using investigation skills.

 Investigation:

Hypothesizing,

Testing Variables,

Conclusions

2. Scientific Thinking

5.2.1 Multiply & Divide whole numbers

5.2.4 Keep a notebook of observations distinguishing inferences from data.

Exhibit Floor Calculations: Slide, Pressure Rockets, Circuit Bench,

Digital Height Readings, Decibel Meter

Students can collect data from each group member at exhibits that provide numerical readings and perform calculations like computing averages. A field trip journal can be kept to record data and conclusions drawn by each group.

Data Gathering Skills

3. Physical Setting

5.3.2,3 Stars are like the sun but some are smaller or larger; identification of stars

5.3.4      & 5.3.8 Different states of water; the impact of cooling & heating materials

5.3.6, 13 Earth’s gravity pulls objects down without touching the objects

5.3.11 Investigate speed, motion & forces

**Star Lab: Constellations and Star Qualities

**Oxidation Sensation Demo.

*Physics Exhibit Sheet: see Pulleys, Parachute Drop, Moonwalk, Slide, Confusion Illusion Room

**Extreme Physics Lab

Lab: Students view the constellations from within the Star Lab Dome and learn about the placement and identification of stars in North America.

Demonstration: students observe the various states of matter: liquid, solid, gas.

Students can perform tasks and answer questions provided on the Physics Exhibit Sheet for exhibits pertaining to gravity

4. The Living Environment

5.4.1 In a particular environment, some kinds of plants & animals survive

5.4.Different characteristics aid survival

5.4.8 Fossils compare to living organisms

**Ocean Ecosystems Lab

*Tidal Pool Topic Guide

Swap Shop

Lab: Students handle, observe, record information about tidal pool invertebrate plants and animals exploring classification & the food chain.

Guide: Activity sheets allow students to record observations about the tidal pool ecosystem and organisms.

Students examine fossils and look for counterparts in the tidal pool

6. Common Themes

5.6.2 Demonstrate that diagrams, sketches can be used to represent objects

5.6.4 Investigate that things change in regular ways

Minds Eye Exhibit: Pictures

*Physics Exhibit Sheet: Hot Air Balloon, Bernoulli Ball , Pressure Rockets

Students can observe the artwork on the walls and note how these pictures represent reality; distortions in perceptions can be noted.

Students can steadily increase the air pressure or heat until it reaches a certain level that creates a reaction which they can observe and record
