SCIENCE CENTRAL 4th GRADE EXHIBIT/PROGRAM CHART MATCHING STATE STANDARDS

STATE STANDARDS

EXHIBIT/
PROGRAM

ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TOPIC/SKILL

1. The Nature of Science and Technology

4.1.1,2  Same investigations can be done in different places but results can vary

4.1.3 Clear communication is essential

4.1.5 Cooperative investigation

 * Electricity Topic Guide & Rock Detective Lab

Topic Guides and Labs engage written and interpersonal skills.

Students create circuits at the Circuit Bench in the Electricity Guide and test rocks in the Rock Detective Lab. Both activities may be like those in class but similar and different results will occur depending on the circuit parts used and the rocks examined.

All labs and topic guides require group investigation, written activities, and group discussion.

Inquiry Skill:

Investigation Electricity

Rocks

2. Scientific Thinking

4.2.3 Make simple electrical connections

4.2.5 Use observations and written descriptions in investigations.

 *Electricity Topic Guide

*Swap Shop Trading Sheet provided in Rock Topic Guide

Students can take part in the High Voltage game by filling out activity sheets at 9 magnet and electricity exhibits. This is a self-directed guide with worksheets teachers may use for assessment.

Students can fill out observations forms on rocks, minerals, shells they wish to trade and bring in to Swap Shop for points used in  trading for one of our collection.

Arithmetic Skills

3. Physical Setting

4.3.1, Observe that the moon can be seen sometimes at night or in the day

4.3.2 Investigate and explain air as a substance around us

4.3.5, 6,7 Erosion occurs due to factors in the environment creating rock breakage and weathering. Due to environmental factors rocks are composed of many things.

4.3.12 Heat is given off by friction

4.3.15 Magnets pull things made of iron& pushes/pulls other magnets

4.3.16 Electrical charges

**Star Lab: Constellations

Exhibits: Air Cannon, Pressure Rockets, Wind Mill,  Wind Tunnel,  Bernoulli Ball, Hot Air Balloon

**Rock Program: Rock Detective Lab, Mineral Mining Demonstration, Swap Shop

Exhibit: Slide as an example of friction

Static Electricity Demonstration

Astronomy Lab is currently under development for second semester.

Students can see how air pushes objects and can create different amounts of pressure by how it is manipulated.

Lab: Students test rocks using a dichotomous key to identify and classify them as they solve a myster.

Demonstration: Students learn which type of mining is used for minerals and the product created from those minerals.

Swap Shop: Students engage in rock or mineral trading in the Swap shop

See above

4. The Living Environment

4.4.2 Insects depend on dead animals & plants for food

4.4.5 Plants produce a multitude of seeds

*Swap Shop Tree Sheet

Students can observe impressions in bark from beaver and Bark Beetles, a variety of seeds, tree rings, pinecones, unique tree bark samples, fossils.

5. The Mathematical World

4.5.3            Differences between area & volume

4.5.4            Graphical Displays show trends

Cubic Units

AEP Learn with Wind, Light

Students manipulate cubes to visualize  the concepts of area & volume.

Students access the AEP Web Page at exhibit floor computers showing them graphic displays of the electricity usage from the wind turbine and solar panels observable outside Science Central windows. These graphs can be compared to other AEP locations.
