STATE STANDARDS

EXHIBIT/
PROGRAM

ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TOPIC/SKILL

1. The Nature of Science and Technology

2.1.1 Manipulate an object for information.

2.1.2 Using tools to gain info.

2.1.3 Write observations & compare

2.1.5 Work as a team

2.1.6 Use tools to build & design things

All exhibits involve manipulation

Tools available:

  *Measurement Exhibit Sheet

  Swap Shop Magnifiers

  Weather Instruments

 Earthquake Table

Students can work in teams doing these activities.

Students can fill out a chart on body measurements.

Students can compare their measurements with other students.

Draw favorite measuring tool and tell about its uses.

Students can magnify several objects in Swap Shop & draw them.

Students build a structure with materials similar to an erector set   and observe how it withstands vibrations noting Richter scale.

Inquiry Skill: Using tools

2. Scientific Thinking

2.2.2 Make estimates of familiar lengths, weights, and time intervals and check them

2.2.4 Assemble constructions using interlocking blocks, erector set

 *Measurement Exhibit Sheet

Slide

Pressure Rockets

Earthquake Table

Tessellations

Puzzle Tables

Students can make predictions before they measure at exhibits.

Predict slide times for different students and record their times.

Students create air pressure by cranking a lever that launches rockets  to varying heights. They can experiment and compare.

+see above box  for Earthquake Table

Students create designs & patterns with interlocking foam shapes.

Students manipulate problem solving activities by manipulating puzzle pieces; uses small motor skills.

**Weather Program: Young Forecaster Lab, Weather Alert! Topic Guide, Demonstration

Star Lab Outreach Program

**Swap Shop Trading

*Electricity/Magnet Exhibit Sheet

Lab: students see how a meteorologist predicts weather and they prepare a weather report describing weather conditions.

Topic Guide: self-guided activity sheets fot weather exhibits.

The pattern of stars and planets is discussed with one of our many canisters at your school.

Students bring in rocks, observe, describe and trade for new rocks.

Students observe that electricity comes from coal, wind, and sun.

Students observe how magnets work and can move objects

4. The Living Environment

2.4.1 Different features in animals

2.4.6 Differences in people

*Tidal Pool Cool Topic Guide

 *Measurement Sheet

Students observe Tidal Pool, ask staff questions about the animals and fill out the activity sheets.

Students measure themselves & others and compare differences.

Animals & Ecosystems

5. The Mathematical World

2.5.3 Changing one thing impacts another

Pressure Rockets

Hot Air Balloon

Laser Harp

Air Cannon

Spin Table

Minds Eye Mirror Exhibits

Students see how cranking impacts height of rockets.

Students see how temperature effects movement of balloon.

Students move hands in different ways to create different tones.

Students pound on the cannon to impact movement of flaps.

Students turn moving arms & legs to impact rotations.

Students change body position to get different perceptions.

Physics

Reasoning: Cause to Effect

6. Common Themes

2.6.1 Models may not be like reality.

Models: eye, ear, skin, dinosaur, train, airplanes, skeleton, heart

Students can draw a model and list what is missing from the real object.
