SCIENCE CENTRAL 3rd GRADE EXHIBIT/PROGRAM CHART MATCHING STATE STANDARDS

STATE STANDARDS

EXHIBIT/
PROGRAM

ACTIVITY

SUGGESTED TOPIC/SKILL

1. The Nature of Science and Technology

3.1.1 Similar results are expected with similar investigations

3.1.3 Using charts, tables to record results

3.1.4 Discuss investigations with others

3.1.5 Cooperative investigation

3.1.6,7 Observe how tools like computers impact lifestyle

Manipulate exhibits for results: slide, pressure rockets, wind tunnel  parachute drop, laser harp, air cannon, oscilloscope, spin table,

**Ocean Eco-System Lab

Floor Computers: AEP Web Page,  Satellite Readings, CAD Cam  for design, Game Computers.

Students can work in teams doing these activities.

Students can manipulate variables at a variety of exhibits and keep a chart, table or journal of the different/similar results.

Lab: Students explore the tidal pool animals in the lab, keeping observation records, discussing observations, solving the mystery of the food chain.

Students can observe, record, and explain the use of computers at different exhibits.

Inquiry Skill:

Investigation, Observation, Record Keeping

Ecosystems

Invertibrates

Computers

2. Scientific Thinking

3.2.3 Keep an understandable notebook

on observations to be read later

3.2.6 Make sketches and write descriptions for explaining procedures

*Exhibit Sheets: Measurement,

Sound, Physics

*Tidal Pool Guide

Teachers can use exhibit sheets to create an observation form for their students. Exhibit sheets list exhibits, location, science concept and suggested activities/questions for students

Students can fill out activity sheets on the Tidal Pool by observing and asking questions to the Tidal Pool Staff.

Invertibrates,

Ecosystems

3. Physical Setting

3.3.1-4 Motion of sun & moon in a day;

stars in the sky scattered unevenly; sun is seen in the daytime; moon looks different each day

3.3.5,6,7 Process of change, like weather occurs on earth; protection against adverse weather is needed; weather’s impact on human activity

3.3.8 Moving air & water can run machines

3.3.9 Sound is created by vibrations

**Star Lab: Constellations

Astronomy Lab on Sun & Moon currently in creation for second semester

**Young Forecasters Lab

* Weather Alert Topic Guide:

Tornado, Rainbow, Cloud Exhibits and Satellite Station

Exhibits: Air Cannon, Pressure Rockets, Wind Mill, turbine, Wind Tunnel,  Bernoulli Ball

*Sound Deck

Lab: Students view the constellations from within the Star Lab Dome and learn about the placement of stars in North America

Lab: Students engage in the process of creating a weather forecast and discuss how the forecast helps them prepare for different weather conditions. Recording their forecast and retaining a copy of  this forecast is the culmination of the lab.

Topic Guide: Students observe and record observations on activity sheets for the weather exhibits

Students can observe and record how each of  these exhibits show how air can create force which can do work and therefore can be used in machines like the turbine.

Decks are laminated cards directing students to specific exhibits.

4. The Living Environment

3.4.1 Living things can be sorted in groups

3.4.5 Extinct organisms resemble today’s animals

*Tidal Pool Cool Topic Guide

Swap Shop Fossils & Tidal Pool Animals

See description above

Students can observe animals & plants in the Tidal Pool and then find similar fossils in the Swap Shop.

Fossils

5. The Mathematical World

3.5.1,3  Differing units of measurement

Height Measurement Wall

Students can compare feet and meters

Measurement

6. Common Themes

3.6.3 We can learn from models

Models: eye, ear, skin, dinosaur, train, airplanes, skeleton, heart

Students can draw or list each model and list what they learn from each one.
