POSITION DESCRIPTION: Science Central, a hands-on science center (physical, natural and applied sciences), is currently hiring a knowledgeable, self-motivated, self-directed Planetarium Manager. In coordination with the Education team, this position will handle all aspects of running the Planetarium and NOAA’s (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s) Science On a Sphere theater including writing and presenting programs, maintaining equipment, and training other staff to operate the two theaters. This is a professional, mid-level position reporting to the Education Director.
Duties will include:
- Developing and presenting Planetarium and Science On a Sphere programs for the public, schools, and private groups. This includes:
- Operating and maintaining a Spitz starball, Digistar 7 fulldome system, and a laser system.
- Facilitate activities and live programs for K-12 audiences, the general public, and special groups such as scouts, teacher workshops, birthday parties, etc.
- Work with the Education Director to ensure school Planetarium and Science On a Sphere programs correlate with State educational standards.
- Host special events in the planetarium and Science On a Sphere, such as fundraisers or evening receptions.
- Prepare the Planetarium and Science On a Sphere for programs. This includes opening/closing the theaters, turning on lights and equipment, ensuring the theaters are clean and chairs are set-up, and working through other pre-show procedures.
- Operate, maintain, and update the planetarium console, star ball, Science on a Sphere projectors, and theater computers.
- Act as the point-of-contact with the contracted planetarium and Science on a Sphere maintenance and repair firms.
- Train staff on programs and equipment use.
- Support ongoing program and activity development.
- Assist other programs and special events as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS: College degree in astronomy, physics, science education, computer technology, or a related field preferred; 2+ years experience in planetarium field; experience with Linux preferred; experience with Digistar or similar fulldome planetarium software preferred; strong public speaking experience; must be comfortable working in a science-related organization; ability to drive and valid Driver’s License; successful completion of Criminal Background Check.
SCHEDULE: Full-time, schedule will include weekdays, weekends and occasional evenings for special events
SALARY: $40,000; non-exempt position; with full benefits including medical, dental, vision, etc. and generous paid time off
