Visitor Services and Volunteer Manager

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Science Central, a hands-on science center (physical, natural and applied sciences), is currently hiring a self-motivated, self-directed, creative, outgoing, and organized individual to be a lead frontline employee working with all aspects of the daily operations associated with the visitor experience. This is a mid-level position reporting to the Visitor Services Director.

Duties will include:

  • Run the admissions desk, greet visitors, sell tickets with a POS system, communicate about daily activities, promote and sell memberships, handle Gift Shop transactions
  • Coordinate daily operations such as welcoming school and special groups, registers and cash, follow daily admissions opening and closing procedures, maintain a variety of visitor forms
  • Manage issues associated with emergencies, security, injuries, lost children, upset visitors and associated paperwork
  • Record, evaluate and report on visitor data, surveys and accidents
  • Coordinate and analyze surveys and visitor data, and write reports
  • Serve as the primary manager on duty throughout the week, weekends, some evenings and special events
  • Assist with interviewing, training, scheduling and coaching part time Visitor Services staff.
  • Coordinate, grow and improve the volunteer and intern program by acquiring, training and monitoring high school, college and adults applicants
  • Assist with maintaining, troubleshooting and improving technological systems

REQUIRED SKILLS: Strong ability to multi-task in a high-paced, family-oriented environment. Responsible, organized, time-and detail-oriented. Demonstrated ability to work independently, and team-oriented. Outgoing, strong communication and public speaking abilities, must like people, comfortable and patient working with customers of all types, ages and backgrounds. Flexible, sense of humor, creative problem-solver, and professional in attitude and appearance. Cheerful, energetic, and enthusiastic. Ability to work long hours for special events. Flexibility and capability to adapt to changing priorities and schedules. Ability to partner with a wide variety of diverse colleagues and business/community associates. Moderate lifting (approx. 40 lbs.). Knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and related programs, experience working with databases, ability to learn complex technological processes, ability to learn software quickly and independently.

QUALIFICATIONS: Have or working towards a college degree is preferred, some post-secondary education is highly recommended. Must possess at least two years of work experience and/or educational training working with people in retail, customer service, hospitality cultural sector, or related background. Must have “sales” skills and comfortable encouraging the sales of memberships, Gift Shop merchandise, etc. Experience with cash handling and cash register operations. Experience in the cultural/informal education field preferred. Must be comfortable working in a science-related organization. Experience with training/managing staff preferred. Successful completion of a Criminal Background Check is required.

SCHEDULE: Full-time. Schedule will include some weekends, early hours and evenings. Must be flexible.

SALARY: $40,000/year salary, full-time, non-exempt position, full benefits including medical, dental, vision, life, etc. and generous paid time off
